Leigh Matthews Trophy

Information

 Introduction:

  • Awarded in recognition of the best (most valuable) player of the season
  • Named in honour of the former league player who won the first MVP award, Leigh Matthews
  • First awarded in 2002 (AFL) and 2017 (AFLW)
  • Winners prior to 2002 were given the award retrospectively in 2005
  • Officially known as the Most Valuable Player

 Voting:

  • Awarded by the players – players cannot vote for their own teammates
  • At the end of the home and away season, each team votes for three players to be considered for election
  • Two weeks into the finals, the AFLPA sends a final ballot to all players
  • Players award 3, 2 and 1 votes to the players they regard as the best, second best and third best
